Better Angels - Sacramento

A bipartisan citizen's movement working to unify our divided nation

Better Angels Events

Better Angels holds workshop and other events that  bridge the polarizing political divide we have in this country.  These events allow conservatives and liberals to get past destructive stereotypes so we can have civil conversations about real issues that lead to productive problem-solving.

Join us for a free screening of the documentary, Better Angels:  Reuniting America, by four-time Emmy winner Jim Brown (running time 50 minutes).  The film documents a Better Angels Workshop held shortly after the 2016 election, when 8 Trump voters and 8 Clinton voters met to exchange views.   See for yourself how the Better Angels methods can reduce polarization and increase respect even among people with radically different political views.

Depolarize From Within Workshop

Much of today’s extreme polarization is driven by how we talk with like-minded people about those on the other side.  Too often we stereotype or ridicule our fellow citizens who support the other political party and its leaders.  People on the other side have become not just strangers but enemies. How we talk among ourselves about "them" fuels the fire that threatens our democracy.

What if we learn the discipline of non-polarizing attitudes and words about the political “Other” with whom we share a national past and future?

This workshop will help you:

  • Become more aware of your own polarizing thoughts and attitudes
  • Learn ways to depolarize yourself so you can disagree without demonizing others
  • Learn to intervene in conversations when people veer into contempt and ridicule for those who hold other political views

Better Angels Debate

A Better Angels Debate is a highly structured conversation in which a group of people speak, listen and think together to grapple with a difficult topic. Everyone is encouraged to express their views.  These are not like traditional debates where people compete to win.

Goals:

  • To engage in a process that gets us all a little closer to the truth.
  • To become more aware of the validity of differing views.
  • To build tighter community relationships.

The Process: We’ll use modified parliamentary procedures to create an atmosphere of decorum and respect.  We ask and expect participants to behave respectfully toward one another.

The debate topic is TBD
